Refuse to Quit

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit. - Napoleon Hill
“Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit.” – Napoleon Hill

The Speaking Bipolar mantra is, “Keep fighting.” Those are the words that get me out of bed every morning.

Almost anything is possible for the one who refuses to quit. It’s why I’m able to work full time with both a mental and physical chronic illness.

Napoleon Hill reminds us how important tenacity is to success. No one reaches the top of a mountain if they give up early in their journey. The same is true with our mental health.

Have Courage

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. - Walt Disney
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” – Walt Disney

You may think of courage as facing a lion, but it isn’t always so intense. Sometimes courage is getting out of bed, driving our car, or even taking a shower.

Living with a chronic illness brings lots of fear with it. You can learn to be brave. Decide to try no matter what. Everything starts with that decision.

You may need to alter some dreams after a chronic illness diagnosis, but never stop dreaming.

Press On

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination. - Earl Nightingale
“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.” – Earl Nightingale

The next of our inspirational quotes for living with mental illness is also about courage – the courage to keep going.

Most of us know the roadmap we need to follow. Whether it’s a treatment plan, a school curriculum, or a relationship trajectory, the hardest part isn’t figuring out where to go. It’s getting there.

One of my goals is to write a book. Slowly, I’m pulling together my favorite posts into a life-lessons book I can share with you. Writing is the path, but the courage comes in with continuing to write and edit every day and believing readers will enjoy my words.

Try Again

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | A winner is just a loser who tried one more time. - George M. Moore Jr.
“A winner is just a loser who tried one more time.” – George M. Moore Jr.

When you have bipolar disorder, every setback can feel like a crushing failure. It’s no wonder why so many give up.

In reality, life is full of unsuccessful efforts. The good news? Success is possible.

It’s rumored Thomas Edison said he failed 10,000 times while trying to create the lightbulb. Do we remember those 10,000 fails today? Of course not. We appreciate his efforts every time we flip a switch and light appears.

The last few attempts may not have worked, but the next one might. Don’t stop now.

Change Yourself

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves. - Viktor E. Frankl

Butterflies are wonderful creatures. I’ll never understand how a caterpillar can transform over the course of a few weeks into something so beautiful.

Each of us has the same creative power inside of us. Our process might take a little longer, but the power to change is always there.

Even the smallest changes can make a big impact.

Margaret Lukens is famous for her suggestion to make new goals as small as possible. In fact, she recommends starting by flossing just one tooth. Yes, that sounds silly, but often the hardest part of changing ourselves is getting started.

If you make a new goal so simple it’s almost trivial, you’re more likely to start. Once you get going, the momentum will build on itself.

Be Kind

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | "You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

In any collection of inspirational quotes for living with mental illness, you have to include at least one about showing love to others. Love and kindness are the most important elements in our lives.

The world we’re living in has made it clearer than ever how quickly things can change. The ones we love can disappear in an instant.

Take a moment right now to tell someone how much you care. Make a phone call, send a text, or write a note you can mail or give to them later. No one ever goes to the end saying, “I wish I hadn’t spread so much love.”

While you’re at it, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Spend the afternoon in self-care. Write in your journal to catch up on how you’re doing. Give yourself a treat. You are just as important as everyone else.

Curious about how Speaking Bipolar started? Here’s a brief history.

Start Fresh

7 Powerful Inspirational Quotes for Living With Mental Illness | "Life always offers you a second chance. It is called tomorrow." - Dylan Thomas |
“Life always offers you a second chance. It is called tomorrow.” – Dylan Thomas

One of my favorite parts of the Anne of Green Gables collection is Anne’s insight, “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

Tomorrow is a clean slate. What you did today or yesterday doesn’t have to color tomorrow. You can choose to make the next day better.

My history with bipolar disorder is full of terrible decisions. The rising of the morning sun doesn’t erase the mistakes I made, but it gives me a chance to be better.

Every day is a blank slate. Use yours wisely.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of quotes. With all the negativity in the news, I’m attempting to put more positive out into the world.
